We know that leadership plays a crucial role in the success and growth of any business. In your organization, how do you inspire those around you and keep them engaged? What about the next generation of leaders in your organization? How do you identify and develop them?

Nelson Mandela said, “A leader … is like a shepherd. He stays behind the flock, letting the most nimble go out ahead, whereupon the others follow, not realizing that all along they are being directed from behind.”

Essentially, the best leaders don’t create followers but instead, create more leaders. Effective leadership sets the direction, inspires and motivates employees, and drives innovation and change. It is essential for your business to prioritize developing and growing leaders within your organization for several reasons:

  1. Vision and Direction: Leaders provide a clear vision and direction for your business. They set strategic goals, articulate your company’s mission, and establish a roadmap for success. A strong leader ensures that everyone understands the purpose and objectives, fostering alignment and focus.
  2. Motivation and Engagement: Leaders have the power to inspire and motivate their teams. They create a positive workplace culture, foster a sense of belonging, and encourage your employees to engage. A leader who genuinely cares about their employees’ well-being and professional growth can increase job satisfaction, productivity, and retention rates.
  3. Decision-Making and Problem-Solving: Effective leaders make informed decisions and solve the business’s most complex problems. They analyze situations, gather input from their team members, and consider different perspectives. Skilled leaders demonstrate critical thinking, sound judgment, and the ability to make tough choices. They recognize that their decisions impact the entire organization and contribute to its success.
  4. Innovation and Adaptability: In today’s rapidly evolving business landscape, leaders must drive innovation and facilitate change. They encourage creative thinking, empower employees to take calculated risks, and foster a culture of continuous improvement. Leaders who embrace change and adapt quickly to new technologies and market trends can position their businesses for long-term success.
  5. Talent Development and Succession Planning: Developing leaders from within your organization is vital for long-term sustainability. When businesses invest in leadership development programs, they nurture talent and create a pipeline of future leaders. This approach ensures continuity, minimizes disruptions during leadership transitions, and retains valuable institutional knowledge.
  6. Effective Communication and Collaboration: Leaders play a critical role in fostering effective communication and collaboration across your organization. They set expectations, provide feedback, and encourage open dialogue. Strong leaders promote teamwork, bridge gaps between different departments, and facilitate the exchange of ideas, ultimately enhancing overall performance.
  7. Building Relationships and Influencing Others: Leaders build relationships not only within the organization but also with external stakeholders such as clients, partners, and investors. They represent the company’s values and establish credibility, which can lead to business opportunities and strategic partnerships. Effective leaders are skilled influencers who can inspire trust and mobilize others toward a common goal.

As an organization, we recognize the value of effective and skilled leadership, and we know that identifying and supporting the next generation of leaders in our community is vital. We believe that as Grand Junction Area Chamber of Commerce members, you are uniquely positioned to take advantage of opportunities to have your employees learn and grow into the leaders that your organization needs today and, in the future, to thrive. Each month, we have networking opportunities for any employees of our members to engage with peers, connect, and collaborate. The Young Professional Network (YPN) of Mesa County is another excellent opportunity for employees to engage and build their network of peers. The relationships created and nurtured through our events and YPN can be extremely valuable.

Quarterly we have opportunities for members and their employees to attend the Quarterly Membership luncheon where they can be inspired by strategic thinkers and experts presenting topics that impact your business now. We work to address topics that are “keeping our businesses up at night” and try to cover topics that are timely and relevant. This series of events would be a great opportunity to invite an employee to join that has shown interest in professional growth and development.

Finally, several times a year, we hold various Summits including the Health Summit, Energy Summit, and the newest addition – the Young Professional Summit. Each Summit hosts amazing speakers featured in breakout or keynote sessions that all businesses will find interesting and impactful.

We are committed to identifying, growing, and recognizing the emerging leaders in our community and that is how the idea for the Young Professional Summit blossomed. This will be the event to attend and send your employees to if you want to continue to create and develop leadership in your organization and for our community. Save the date for August 23rd and plan to join us as we honor our Best Slope Next Gen leaders from across the Western Slope, learn about dynamic and engaging topics that will inspire, and support our community’s professionals as they develop into strong leaders.

If you currently have programs in place that are successfully growing leaders, we’d love to hear from you and learn more! As always, we encourage you to reach out to our Membership Engagement Director, Allison Ellington, if you would like more information and ideas on how to get your employees involved and connected with us!
