Embracing Business Resources and Looking Outside of Industry for a Resilient Future
As President & CEO of the Grand Junction Chamber of Commerce and Fellow of the AgriWest Initiative and 5th generation rancher, we know well – and frequently speak of – the importance of agriculture. We don’t have to remind this community that agriculture fuels our economy, fills our plates, and shapes our landscape. Whether it’s our beef ranchers, peach growers, or wool producers, the Ag industry is a foundation of our region’s economy and identity.
However, while we recognize the importance of Ag, we want to focus on something else just as crucial: building a resilient, secure future for this industry. And to achieve that, we need our Ag community to embrace its place in the broader business landscape and make use of the resources available here in Mesa County. No other industry is more independent – both in method and mindset – than agriculture. That independence is a source of pride and a testament to generations of grit. But we can’t let a steadfast adherence to tradition get in the way of the future.
Many of the challenges our local Ag industry faces are shared by other sectors: rising operational costs, increasing regulatory demands, the struggle to find and retain a skilled workforce, and the critical task of succession planning. Too often, though, our farmers and ranchers tackle these challenges alone, when resources, support, and partnerships are available to ease the burden. The Chamber, along with the Business Incubator Center and many community partners, are here to offer support designed for business owners of every kind, including the Ag industry.
We encourage our local Ag businesses to see themselves not only as legacy operations but as active members of Mesa County’s business community. That means taking full advantage of the resources and support available. From networking events that connect you with other business leaders to training programs focused on building operational efficiency, to representation and advocacy on policy issues—these are tools designed to help your business thrive, not just today but well into the future. There are numerous resources available, including classes and consulting opportunities on essential topics like accounting, HR, budgeting, and talent recruitment. These services strengthen businesses of all types, including food producers, by providing tools for sustainable growth. Embracing these resources isn’t a departure from tradition; it’s a wise investment in the longevity and success of your operation.
This isn’t just about tradition; it’s about building a resilient future. Let’s ensure agriculture remains a cornerstone of Mesa County’s economy and a valued part of our business community by taking the steps today that will allow it to flourish tomorrow.
Our message to ranchers, growers, and producers is simple: Don’t ignore what’s available to you. Engage with opportunities that strengthen your business and invest in securing your future. Agriculture is an essential part of the fabric of our business community, and the Chamber stands ready to help support your success. We want to see our Ag industry thrive for generations to come, but that can only happen if we’re willing to adapt, reach out, and work on the business, not just in the business.
