Mesa County’s approach to workforce development is receiving national attention.

The Grand Junction Area Chamber of Commerce was recently honored by the Western Association of Chamber Executives (W.A.C.E.) with the Outstanding Chamber Program Award for Large Chambers for its workforce initiative, WestSlope Works. Chambers from across the western half of the United States were considered for this recognition, making the selection both competitive and significant.

This award is not simply a milestone for the Grand Junction Chamber. It is validation that Mesa County is leading with intention, collaboration, and measurable impact in addressing one of the most pressing challenges facing communities nationwide: workforce development.

WestSlope Works was launched in 2023 with seed funding from the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment as part of a statewide effort to expand work-based learning. What began as a regional initiative has evolved into a strategic framework that bridges the gap between employers and the workforce while actively engaging a wide network of community partners.

At its core, WestSlope Works is built around high-quality work-based learning opportunities. Internships, apprenticeships, job shadowing, and on-the-job training are more than resume builders. They are structured pathways that connect education to employment and align classroom learning with real industry demand.

The importance of this work cannot be overstated. Employers across sectors consistently report challenges in finding talent with the right skills and experience. At the same time, students and job seekers often lack clear visibility into career pathways available in their own community. WestSlope Works addresses both sides of that equation.

By convening employers, educators, workforce partners, and community organizations, the program strengthens alignment across the talent pipeline. Businesses receive support in designing meaningful training experiences tailored to their operational needs. Learners gain hands-on experience that builds both technical skills and professional confidence. Community partners collaborate instead of operating in silos.

The result is not just more programs. It is a stronger, more coordinated workforce ecosystem.

The recognition from W.A.C.E. underscores something even broader. WestSlope Works has not only moved the needle for workforce development in Mesa County, it has demonstrated to the chamber industry nationwide how workforce initiatives can be developed, executed, and sustained in a way that produces measurable results. The program provides a replicable model for other communities facing similar workforce challenges.

That distinction matters. Chambers are uniquely positioned to convene business, education, and policy leaders. When they step into workforce leadership with clarity and purpose, the impact can be transformational.

Mesa County’s recognition reflects that leadership.

Workforce development is not a short-term solution. It is a long-term investment in economic resilience and competitiveness. The Outstanding Chamber Program Award affirms that this region is not only investing in today’s employers, but also building tomorrow’s workforce with intention.

The work continues. WestSlope Works remains focused on expanding high-quality work-based learning opportunities, deepening community partnerships, and ensuring that Mesa County is prepared to meet the workforce demands of the future.
