Last week, nearly 60 business and community leaders, including participants from this year’s Mesa County Leadership Program, traveled to Denver for the Grand Junction Area Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Legislative Days. This two-day event provided a critical opportunity for Western Slope businesses to engage directly with key decision-makers and thought leaders who shape policies affecting our region’s economic future.
The Chamber’s delegation kicked off the trip with a lunch alongside Western Slope legislators, reinforcing the importance of maintaining strong connections with our representatives. The afternoon was packed with insightful discussions at the Legislative Services Building, just steps from the State Capitol. Lt. Governor Dianne Primavera welcomed the group before a series of informative sessions.
Rachel Beck, Executive Director of the Colorado Competitive Council (C3), led a discussion on regulatory reform and business-friendly policies, addressing how legislative changes can either support or hinder economic growth. Infrastructure’s critical role in Western Colorado’s economy was the focus of a session led by Shoshana Lew, Executive Director of the Colorado Department of Transportation. Conversations on climate policy and sustainability, led by Dominique Gomez of the Colorado Energy Office, and a labor and employment update from Joe Barela, Executive Director of the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment, rounded out the first day’s discussions.
The evening provided a chance for deeper engagement over dinner with legislators and coalition partners at Maggiano’s Little Italy. These informal settings allow for candid conversations and stronger relationships between business leaders and policymakers.
Day two began with a focus on Colorado’s economic competitiveness and free enterprise. Meghan Dollar from the Colorado Chamber of Commerce highlighted what the state’s overall business climate means for Western Colorado, while DJ Summers from the Common Sense Institute provided valuable insights into the status of free enterprise in the state. The group then made its way to the Capitol to observe legislative proceedings, ensuring that Western Slope voices were present in the very halls where policies affecting them are decided.
Reflecting on the experience, Candace Carnahan, President & CEO of the Grand Junction Area Chamber of Commerce, emphasized the significance of this annual event: “Advocacy is one of the most important things we do as a Chamber. Bringing our business community to Denver ensures that the voices of Western Slope businesses are heard where it matters most. Legislative Days give our members a seat at the table, and the connections made during this trip will continue to benefit our region long after we return home.”
Evan Walton, 2025 Chair of the Chamber Board, also highlighted the value of the trip: “As business leaders, we have a responsibility to be engaged in the policymaking process. This trip allows us to be proactive, to speak directly with decision-makers, and to help shape policies that impact our businesses and our communities. It’s a reminder that our collective voice carries weight.”
Legislative Days reaffirm the Chamber’s commitment to being a strong advocate for Western Colorado businesses. By showing up, engaging in discussions, and building relationships, our region continues to have a direct influence on the future of business policy in Colorado.
