The Grand Junction Area Chamber of Commerce hosted a sold-out City Council Candidate Forum on March 10th, providing a platform for candidates to discuss business policies, economic growth, and the future of Grand Junction’s workforce and infrastructure. The event brought together business leaders, community stakeholders, and candidates for an open dialogue on the critical issues shaping the city’s economic future.
Candidates answered questions centered on balancing government involvement in economic development and infrastructure investment while ensuring policies do not create unnecessary barriers for businesses and residents. Inquiries also covered key topics such as impact fees, setting priorities, and strengthening collaboration between the City and business community. Throughout the forum, candidates agreed that true collaboration—leaning on the expertise within our community—only enhances city initiatives and that improving this approach is vital for Grand Junction’s pathway forward.
One of the most pressing topics from attendees was the recent downtown transportation changes and their reported negative impact on businesses. Candidates’ responses varied regarding what should be done moving forward, but most agreed that the process could have been handled better and must be improved in the future. The forum provided business owners with valuable insight into how candidates approach these critical issues, offering an opportunity to evaluate their leadership and decision-making strategies ahead of the upcoming election.
“Engaging in the Chamber of Commerce Candidate Forum was incredibly important because small businesses are the backbone of Grand Junction.” said Ben VanDyke, Candidate for the open At-Large seat. He continued to say, “Grand Junction thrives when our businesses thrive, and I’m committed to ensuring our city remains a place where entrepreneurs and small businesses can succeed.”
Randall Reitz, Candidate for District E, underscored the impact of this forum saying “The Grand Junction Chamber continues to host the most well-attended and well-facilitated forum. This year’s forum offered an opportunity for all the Grand Junction City Council election candidates to share their views about how to support local business, grow our economy, and collaborate effectively with city council and staff.”
Evan Walton, Chamber Board Chair, emphasized the significance of the forum in ensuring businesses remain engaged in the electoral process, “The policies set by City Council directly affect business owners, employees, and the overall economic vitality of Grand Junction. An informed business community leads to a stronger, more prosperous Grand Junction.”
Cori Elam, a local business owner in attendance, highlighted the significance of the upcoming election and thanked the Chamber for hosting the discussion. “The decisions made by our next City Council will have a direct impact on businesses like mine, from regulations and infrastructure to workforce housing and economic development. It’s critical that businesses (and citizens) take the time to educate themselves on the candidates and their priorities. I appreciate the Chamber for providing this resource and making sure the business community has a voice in this election.”
The Grand Junction Chamber of Commerce will release its Spring Election Voter’s Guide later this week, providing key insights into candidates’ positions on business priorities. This guide will serve as a resource for businesses and voters to make informed decisions in the upcoming election.
With Election Day on April 8th, the Chamber strongly encourages all businesses to engage and community members to cast their votes. The leadership chosen in this election will help shape Grand Junction’s economic future—making participation in the voting process imperative.
